Who We Are
Medway Lions Chapter
The Medway Lions Club was formally organized over thirty years ago on December 9, 1982, thanks to our sponsor, the Millis Lions Club. For Medway Lions Club members, serving our community is a matter of PRIDE: a pride of Lions who take pride in the many ways we serve our community and above all else, cherish the memories of time spent with friends who share that pride and enjoy the laughs that we have along the way.
Our Club has distinguished itself at the state and district level by being one of the largest contributors to eye research. We were recognized as Best Small Club in the State in 2002 and, once our Club grew in size, Best Large Club in 2005. Medway Lions are individuals who seek the deep satisfaction that comes from helping others and contribute to the Club's efforts based on his or her personal skills, knowledge, and time.
Where the "pride" began
Founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1917 by an insurance agent named Melvin Jones, Lions Club International offered business and professional people a way of sharing their success by helping those less fortunate than themselves. To Lions, the motto "WE SERVE" is not only a motto but a philosophy. The word "LIONS" stands for Loving Individuals Offering Needed Services.
Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes internationally and in their local communities. Lions Clubs are best known for their work with the visually impaired, but they are also involved with the hearing impaired, diabetes awareness, drug and alcohol abuse prevention, and disaster relief efforts worldwide. The Lion's dedication to aiding the blind grew out of a speech by Helen Keller at the 1925 International Convention, when she challenged them to become "Knights of the Blind in the crusade against the darkness."
